Ralph Hasenhüttl hailed his side’s never-say-die attitude after Southampton twice came from behind to rescue a point at Newcastle United.

After a dominant opening 45 minutes that failed to yield a goal, Saints fell behind against the run of play when Callum Wilson scored on 55 minutes.

A first Premier League goal for Mohamed Elyounoussi levelled the scores before Allan Saint-Maximin looked to have struck the winner as the game ticked into the 90th minute.

However, after a VAR review found Adam Armstrong to have been felled in the box, James Ward-Prowse stepped up from the spot to dispatch the latest of equalisers and leave Hasenhüttl pleased with what he saw.

“I’m very happy,” he began. “It was a very deserved point today. We had a little bit more in the first half where we have to score, and it was unbelievable that we are in at half-time 0-0.

we absolutely deserved to get a point in the end.

“In the end, you see how games are going and absolutely we deserved to get a point in the end.

“It was a tough job but the belief was there and the guys never stopped trying and that was the good thing.

“We showed a very, very strong character today,” Hasenhüttl continued. “We had the same game here last season and this season we managed to come back and score.

“We know we can play good football, but what we should try to do is get something comfortable in these situations.

“It’s important we scored two times today, we’ve scored in every game, but what we are still missing is a clean sheet and conceding less goals, as this hasn’t changed so far.”
