Scotland's first encounter at a men's major competition finals in 23 years ended in defeat after a Patrik Schick double made for a deflating opening to their UEFA Euro 2020 campaign.

Around 9,000 fans, who made a deafening noise, were inside Hampden Park to witness the game, with the Scots starting well and squandering a glut of chances to edge themselves in front, before Schick steered a header home following a wonderful Vladimir Coufal cross in the 42nd minute.

Southampton's Stuart Armstrong was named in the starting XI, while Ché Adams was introduced from the bench at half-time by Steve Clark, with Scotland needing some additional potency in attack, but the Czech's continued to stand firm.

Adams did indeed make a difference after his introduction, injecting some pace and direction in to Scotland's frontline, but the killer blow was dealt shortly afterward, greatly reducing the forward's ability to influence the game.

Jack Hendry's attempted drive was charged down with Scotland left exposed in the 52nd minute, as the ball broke to Schick on the halfway line, with the Bayer Leverkusen forward arrowing a near-perfect shot into an open goal from an astonishing distance. The otherwise rowdy Hampden audience were silenced by the sheer audacity of the effort, making the scoreline 2-0 - the way it ended.

Scotland now travel to Wembley Stadium with a greater need for some sort of positive result against England on Friday 18th June, 8pm BST, before bringing their Group D campaign to a close against Croatia on Friday 22nd June, 8pm BST.
