Southampton FC Women’s manager Marieanne Spacey-Cale spoke of her admiration of her team’s performance against Buckland, whilst insisting that there are still improvements to be made.
Saints won 5-1 for the second successive week in National League South West, thanks in part to Ella Pusey’s hat-trick.
It now means Spacey-Cale’s side are two from two in the new season, but the manager was keen that reiterate there are still areas to improve.
“Really pleased, two good games so far,” said Spacey-Cale. “But we know there’s still room for improvement and as a coach you’re always going to look for improvement but happy with where we are at the moment.”
“They [Buckland] always give us a good game. They’re always quite a strong team, they’ve got energy and we just kept our momentum and rode their momentum."
“It was a good battle and a good game of football where they had some real good moments. When we were a bit calmer with the ball, that’s where we played out some of our better football.
“I’m happy that we’ve got the three points again, it’s the next step in our journey this season. I thought we played really well again in parts.
“Buckland gave us a really good game they were strong, they pressed us a few times, but the girls worked that out and played a different way.
“Pleased with how the players made decisions on the pitch and changed the game a little bit through their own decision making.
“Delighted for her [Ella Pusey]. She’s come back from lockdown and she’s really concentrated on finishing and done some work there. But she’s also worked on her physical fitness as well. So really pleased for her.
“Strikers always get the plaudits but I thought Rosie Parnell was fantastic as well today at centre back. Overall I think the team worked really well today, with some of the nice play but also their decision making.
“We’ve got a really strong squad. We wanted to give some minutes and there’s others that have played today for the B team. We have another game on Wednesday now and I’m sure I’m going to need some Anadin to make the decision!
“It’s all about competing for shirt at the moment. We want to have this fluidity between the first team and the B team to ensure that everyone is competitive. You can’t rest here. If you want to play, you have to play at the highest level you can.
“I think we’ve got that in training, we’re starting to get that in games. I look forward to seeing the B team result today and who the stand out players were from there.”
