Big kick-off just days away
Southampton will get their 2020/21 Premier League campaign under way this weekend, travelling to Crystal Palace for the season opener.
Saints won nine of their 19 top-flight away matches last season, including 2-0 at Selhurst Park in an accomplished display.
The team will be looking to continue their positive momentum from 2019/20, and we’ll have all the pre-match build-up and post-match reaction here on southamptonfc.com.
Saints draw Brentford in Carabao Cup
Southampton will host Brentford in the second round of the Carabao Cup, with the third round draw also made.
Ralph Hasenhüttl's side will face the Championship outfit in the final regionalised round of the competition, with the winner travelling to either West Brom or Harrogate Town in Round Three.
Second round ties will be played in the week commencing September 14th, with all third round ties featuring in the week commencing September 21st. Confirmed dates and times will be announced as soon as they are known.
Ward-Prowse earns first England start
Captain James Ward-Prowse made his first senior England start for Gareth Southgate's side in a 1-0 win over Iceland in the Nations League.
Ward-Prowse completed the full 90, while Saints teammate Danny Ings entered the fray with 22 minutes remaining, replacing young debutant Phil Foden, before Raheem Sterling converted a late penalty to win the game.
England next face Denmark in another away match on Tuesday, kicking off at 7.45pm BST.
Saints trio also in international action
Jan Bednarek, Stuart Armstrong and Shane Long have also added to their tally of caps over the last few days in the Nations League.
Bednarek played the full 90 minutes of Poland’s 1-0 defeat in the Netherlands, while Armstrong and Long both made substitute appearances for Scotland and Republic of Ireland respectively.
Bednarek and Armstrong will hope to be involved again tonight, while Jannik Vestergaard could pit his wits against Ward-Prowse and Ings tomorrow.
Jones completes Hull transfer
Defender Alfie Jones has completed a permanent transfer from Southampton to Hull City.
The 22-year-old Academy graduate has departed St Mary’s for the League One side ahead of the 2020/21 season, as he looks to help them make a swift return to the Championship.
It ends a long association with Saints for Bristol-born Jones, who had been with the club since the age of nine and was named Young Player of the Year in 2015.
Friendly preparation for Under-23s
Southampton Under-23s have been warming up for the new Premier League 2 season with friendlies against senior opposition.
The young Saints went down 3-1 to Championship side Coventry at St Mary’s, before losing out to National League visitors Woking by a solitary goal at Staplewood.
The games have given valuable minutes to some of the club’s promising youngsters, who showcased their talent with a tremendous team goal against the Sky Blues.
Academy scholarships for Saints dozen
Southampton Football Club has handed scholarships to 12 players as part of the latest intake into the Under-18s.
Leon Pambou, Matthew Carson, Fedel Ross-Lang and Luke Pearce have joined the club from outside the walls of Staplewood Campus, with eight Academy players having been awarded new deals.
Goalkeepers Gustav Lillienberg and Eddie Beach, defender Lewis Payne, midfield quartet Kaya Tshaka, Goran Babic, Ryan Finnegan, Diamond Edwards, and striker Harvey Woods were already on the club’s books.

Saints welcome latest International Academy Partner
Southampton Football Club is delighted to welcome VIRGINIA FC Youth (VAFC) to its portfolio of International Academy Partners.
Located in the Mid-Atlantic region on the east coast of the United States, VAFC was formed in 2019 on the Virginia Peninsula with a priority to provide participation opportunities and grow the game.
VAFC works with young players aged five to 19, along with a pathway into adult teams that includes an Under-23 Academy at the top of its pyramid. The club has signed a three-year partnership that will see Southampton FC’s global team support the club’s development across its youth programme.
