Steve Evans’s side saw off an out-of-form Shrewsbury side at the MEMS Priestfield on Wednesday night, with Saints’ Alfie Jones winning much of the plaudits during the 2-0 win.

The midfielder played the full 90 minutes and assisted Stuart O’Keefe’s opener in the 26th minute; Olly Lee making sure of the three points for the Gills with a penalty in the 40th minute.

Tom O’Connor continues his recovery from a hamstring injury and so didn’t play any part of Wednesday night’s win.

Up in Scotland, Fraser Forster played the duration of both of Celtic’s wins at St Johnstone and Hamilton which saw Neil Lennon’s side go seven clear at the top.

Forster earned a clean sheet away at St Johnstone during the 3-0 win, before keeping his side in the game for the majority at Hamilton as late goals secured what was, eventually, a comfortable 4-1 victory.

Mohamed Elyounoussi is likely to return soon for the Hoops, as he recovers from an injury which has seen him feature just once since November.

In Spain, Guido Carrilo returned to action for Leganés as a 78th minute substitute, with his side striking late on to secure a vital 2-1 win over Real Sociedad.

The 94th minute free-kick courtesy of Óscar Rodríguez Arnaiz lifted Javier Aguirre’s side to level on points with 17th placed Mallorca, as they continue to fight for their La Liga survival.

Finally, youngster Christoph Klarer continued his pre-season form with Austrian side SKN St. Pölten, playing the full 90 minutes of their 1-1 friendly draw with Mariupol on Tuesday.

Preparation for Pölten and Klarer continues ahead of their Austrian Cup quarter-final at home to Wacker on Thursday night.
