Ralph Hasenhüttl paid tribute to the Southampton fans following the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at St Mary’s.

Jannik Vestergaard’s header levelled things up in the second-half after Daniel James had put the visitors ahead.

And after Kevin Danso was dismissed for a second yellow card, Hasenhüttl was pleased with the way that Saints dug deep to make sure of the point.

“I think we had a few good moments in this game. Finally the opponent was struggling a little bit then and to win is the next step but I’m happy with this point,” Hasenhüttl said.

“It was hard. You could feel how tired the guys are after this week. Lots of them played 90 minutes on Tuesday.

“I must say a big thank you because they were amazing today. They helped us massively in over time and that’s how we get points; together. Working together and celebrating together, I am very proud of everybody.”

The Saints boss made two changes for the game, one of which saw Sofiane Boufal coming into the starting line-up.

Hasenhüttl added: “He [Sofiane] makes a really good game I think. In the first-half he was unlucky in a few scenes, good chances, but also in the second-half he showed how important he is for our game.

“With the injuries to Moussa and Reddy, a guy who takes the ball and is good at dribbling is very important to us.”
