Jannik Vestergaard was delighted to end the long to score his first Southampton goal.

The defender’s first priority is keeping clean sheets, but at 6ft 6in tall, he stands an imposing figure in both boxes.

Against Manchester United at St Mary’s, Vestergaard used his powerful physique to deadly effect, cancelling out Daniel James’s opener to earn Saints a share of the spoils.

“It was very nice seeing the cross come in,” he said. “I tried to hide a little bit, in behind the defenders looking at the ball, and I timed it pretty well.

“I got up higher than the defender, which felt nice. It’s been a long time now without a goal, so it’s nice to break that curse and hopefully there are more to come.”

The United draw rounded off a week in which Saints also won twice on the road, at Brighton in the Premier League and Fulham in the Carabao Cup, having lost their first two matches of the new season.

“After the first two games this is more than we could’ve hoped for,” Vestergaard said of Saints’ resurgence.

“Obviously we still have some things we can do better – we all know that – but now we have a lot of time to work on those and recover a little bit after an intense start.”
