The Young Lions have begun preparations for next month's Under-21 European Championship by training with Gareth Southgate’s England squad this week, with Angus Gunn one of three players selected for their second European competition by manager Aidy Boothroyd.

Boothroyd has this week said he is confident that an “exciting” Under-21s group have the pedigree to triumph in Italy next month; his team face France, Romania and Croatia in the group stages in June.

Gunn was a part of the Under-21s squad that was defeated by Germany on penalties in the semi-finals of 2017's competition in Poland - although he didn’t actually feature - but after a breakthrough season in the Premier League with Southampton, is hoping to play a significant part this time around.

“The main thing for me is just to try and stay focused in training to try and get that number one spot,” the 23-year-old said.

Going to the last tournament in poland was the proudest moment in my career.

“The majority of these players have won trophies with England before so there’s no reason why we can’t go on and do it again.

“There’s a lot of Premier League experience in the team but it doesn’t mean much if we don’t gel and play well together for England. Hopefully we can get to know each other on the pitch in training and make sure we get off to the best possible start.

“Going to the last tournament in Poland was a proud moment in my career but it will be even more so if I can play and contribute to a winning team. That would be up there with one of my biggest achievements so I hope to do that and make everyone proud.”
