"To have it all come together and win the league with an 8-0 victory is brilliant. You can't really want much more than that."

Defender Caitlin Morris summed up the feelings of the Southampton FC Women players, coaches and supporters after they completed a 17th win out of 17 in the Southern Region Women's Football League Premier Division to claim the title.

Saints produced a wonderful display in front of a record crowd of 345 at AFC Totton on Easter Sunday to beat Barton Rovers and seal their status as champions, ensuring promotion to Division One South West of the FA Women's National League in the process.

Centre-back Morris said: "It's been a really long journey and we've progressed a lot as a group and as individuals within that, so to have it all come together and win the league with an 8-0 victory is brilliant. You can't really want much more than that."

Her feelings were echoed by top scorer Chloe Newton, who netted twice against Barton to take her tally for the season to 30.

"It's just amazing," she said. "It shows everyone what we can do, and hopefully we can just go further and further and it's the start of a good journey."

Both players also spoke of their admiration of, and pride in playing for, head coach Marieanne Spacey-Cale, who has overseen an incredible first year at the club.

"It's absolutely great," said Morris. "To have someone of that stature to look up to and play under, you have so much respect for her, not only as a coach but as a player.

"The technical detail and the really finite information she gives you around a game is such a massive help and it has been absolutely brilliant playing for her this season."

Newton added: "She's played a massive part. Obviously, she was a former striker, so I'm constantly learning. It's just great to have her behind us, always motivating us to be our best, and we're constantly learning."
