Matt Targett is aiming to extend Southampton’s unbeaten Premier League start to 2019 when the team return to action at Burnley on Saturday.

Saints took eight points from their four league games in January, while hosts Burnley are themselves unbeaten in five.

Targett is eyeing maximum points from the trip to Lancashire, before another crunch clash at home to Cardiff City the following week.

“We’ll be going there for the win, obviously,” he said of the trip to Turf Moor.

“We know it’s going to be a very difficult test, with a lot of long balls, so we’ve got to be ready for the fight.

“It’s a big couple of weeks coming up, and we’ve got to be ready to extend the gap to the bottom three so there’s no chance for teams to catch us up.”

The defender has started eight of the nine league games overseen by Ralph Hasenhüttl since the manager’s appointment in early December.

“He’s been great – a breath of fresh air with new ideas and he’s so passionate on what he wants,” Targett continued. “He goes into a lot of detail. It’s been great for everyone.

“Obviously each game is different, and I’m still learning, but I’m enjoying my spell in the team and hopefully it continues to the end of the season.”
