Under-23s captain Tom O’Connor will lead his side out at St Mary’s tonight against top of the table Wolverhampton Wanderers in Premier League 2.

It’s free for all supporters to attend, and the young Irishman is urging fans to get behind the Under-23s, as they look to mount a bid for the league’s promotion places.

And, having had time to recover from a blip against Cambridge in the Checkatrade Trophy 10 days ago, O’Connor believes that Saints are well equipped to test leaders of the pack, Wolves, as he continues to adapt to his new position at centre-half.

“It's been a long time since we've played at St Mary’s,” O’Connor said. “Anytime we have the opportunity to play at a big stadium it's a big plus.

“Hopefully there will be a few fans there because it’s a buzz to play in front of a crowd. It's a lovely pitch as well, it's what we live for as footballers.

it's an honour to captain a southampton side. i'm just trying to perform well each week.

“We were very disappointed after the Cambridge game. Everyone knew it wasn't up to the standards we expect. We've got our heads around that, and now focus is on Wolves.

“It's an honour to captain a Southampton side. I'm just trying to perform well each week.

“I try to be myself, and do my job as well as I can. On the pitch I'm loud, and do things right. I lead by example and just control the things that I can.

“I’ve enjoyed [the change in position]. There's obviously different demands playing in defence. You have to focus, but I'm enjoying being on the ball and playing out from the back. Hopefully that'll continue and we'll find a decent result on Friday.”
