A first Premier League goal for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and, more importantly, a first success of the season for Saints against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
The Danish midfielder crowned an all-action midfield performance with a lung-busting run and finish in stoppage time to seal the points, just reward for a determined team performance in south London.
“There are two feelings in the dressing room and they are that we are very happy and relieved because we’ve been working for a result like this for a time now,” Højbjerg said, “and I think everyone in and around the club will share that feeling too.
“The last few games have had some positives, even though we shouldn’t have lost against Leicester. We came back and got a good reaction today, taking on what we needed to do tactically and we delivered.”
The first three points of the campaign were not going to come easily: led by the Dane and fellow midfielder Mario Lemina in the centre, Saints stood firm against a late Palace barrage to delight their travelling supporters.
“Mario is a fantastic player, he has so many attributes to his game that make him a top player. I enjoy playing with a really, really good football player.
“Credit to Palace because it’s a very tough place to come, they are good at creating momentum and physically putting the opponent under pressure.
“Of course, with a little bit of luck, we stood against them and got a clean sheet and a win. Winning is like medicine, it saves your life.”
