WHAT’S AT STAKE?
Saints head into the contest off the back of a 1-0 success in the Carabao Cup against fellow Premier League side Brighton.
Charlie Austin’s 88th minute header was enough to progress to the third round and Mark Hughes’s men will now be looking for their first Premier League victory following an encouraging display against Leicester City, albeit without the desired outcome.
Hosts Crystal Palace will look to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road last time out in the Premier League.
Alexander Sorloth’s first goal for the club helped see off Swansea in the Carabao Cup during the week.
TEAM NEWS
Crystal Palace: A late decision will be made on James Tomkins after he withdrew from the clash with Watford in the warm-up due to a calf problem. Martin Kelly deputised in his absence and there could also be a recall for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The young full-back has impressed before his dismissal against Liverpool.
Southampton: Danny Ings will be monitored with a foot problem that saw him miss out on the Carabao Cup win at Brighton. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg served his one-match suspension in that game so is available again.
RESULTS SO FAR
Swansea 0-1 Palace (Carabao Cup)
Watford 2-1 Palace
Palace 0-2 Liverpool
Fulham 0-2 Palace
OPPOSITION VIEW
Roy Hodgson: “We've not been too disappointed with the start. Even when we've lost the performances have had some very good moments. We're not disappointed, but we possibly could have had a few more points.
"For me it's about making sure the performance is right. We hope that will get us a good result going into the international break.”
Mark Hughes: "We’ve had great support and we want to get back on track, with a first win on the board and then we can start to build our season.
“Roy (Hodgson)’s influence on the Palace team is starting to show now. They’re always very well-organised and well-drilled. I had the benefit of following him at Fulham and you could tell a lot of good work had gone on beforehand.
“I need to try and improve my record at Palace as I’ve been reminded so it’ll be a good start at the weekend to try and change that.”
TOP PERFORMERS
Nathan Redmond’s impact off the bench during the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton helped Saints to a 1-0 victory and prior to that, the winger turned in another good display against Leicester City.
Ryan Bertrand’s thunderbolt and performance against Leicester at full-back also earned him many plaudits, and the captain could be key again in the capital.
The standout performer for Palace so far has once again been Wilfried Zaha. The forward netted in the 2-1 defeat at Watford to make him the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League (24).
Elsewhere, Aaron Wan Bissaka’s early season performances at full-back have earned him international recognition with England Under-21s and the 20-year-old will be hoping to pick up where he left off before his red card against Liverpool.
