Rising to the challenge, Mark Hughes's side are now within touching distance of Swansea immediately above, and McCarthy knows the value of not just the points, but the impact of a winning feeling ahead of two huge away ties, first against Everton and then against the Swans themselves.
"It is a massive three points," he said. "We knew coming into this game today that we couldn't get anything less.
"I thought the boys put a tremendous amount of effort in. Dušan took both of his goals excellently. We take a lot of confidence going into next Saturday against Everton.
"Obviously, it was disappointing to concede just before half-time – we need to manage the game better at times. But the grit and determination that the lads showed second half was second to none.
"It is nice to have a good game personally. But, more importantly, the team and club earned three massive points."
