Mark Hughes has urged his players to channel their frustrations to register a crucial three points this weekend when Saints meet AFC Bournemouth at St Mary’s.
Saints will look to close the gap on those above them as they continue their fight for survival in the Premier League.
“We’re in the here and now. It’s about getting points on the board, clearly. We’re up against our local rivals who will have a say in that but I sense this week it’s all about our determination and focus for the game,” Hughes said.
“Any disappointments or frustrations we’ve had in the past, we must use that to get a better performance out of the group and the players are really focused on doing that at the weekend.
“I don’t sense there is any apprehension about what is ahead of us. There’s a real determination to change the situation, which we have to. We have to win the vast majority of the games that we have left and it is what we’ll attempt to do.
“It’s not going to be easy and people will say ‘well why would you expect to win those games when you haven’t been able to do that consistently during the season’ but sometimes situations focus people’s minds.
“We’ve got to make sure we’re really competitive and that we ask questions of a good Bournemouth side who are a talented group themselves, but we’ve got to get the job done.”
