Matt Targett was delighted to take full advantage of his time on the pitch against Saint-Étienne.

The left-back came on after 57 minutes of Southampton's third pre-season friendly, at the Stade Municipal de Chambéry, with the scores level at 0-0, before quickly providing two superb assists to set the side on the way to a 3-0 triumph.

Targett first whipped in a tremendous cross for Manolo Gabbiadini to power a header into the top corner in the 64th minute, before teeing up James Ward-Prowse for the second with a low ball two minutes later.

"I'm very pleased with my contribution," he said. "It's still early doors and we've still got two games next week, but when you don't play and you get a chance to come on the pitch you've got to make an impression to the manager and show you want to start."

The result marked an excellent end to a positive week in France, and Targett was delighted with the progress made under the guidance of Mauricio Pellegrino.

"This week we've worked very hard," he said. "The manager has put his philosophy into training, he's shown us what he wants us to do and the game was a perfect chance to express ourselves and show him what we can do.

"He's been a breath of fresh air. A new manager, new ideas and a new playing style. It's a very exciting playing style and all the players are fully behind him."
