Southampton defender Cédric helped Portugal to a 1-0 victory over hosts Russia in the Confederations Cup.

The right-back played the full game, in Moscow, as Cristiano Ronaldo's eighth-minute effort separated the sides in what was the second match of the group stage for both nations.

Cédric, who scored in Portugal's opening 2-2 draw with Mexico, threatened again this time out, but was denied in the second half but Russia keeper Igor Akinfeev.

The result takes the European champions to four points ahead of their final match of the group stage, against New Zealand, on Saturday.

It also puts them well on track for the semi-finals, with the top two sides advancing.
