With Fraser Forster watching on, the full-back made an impact inside ten minutes, when his over-lapping run was picked out by Raheem Sterling, and his perfectly-weighted low cross allowed Harry Kane to finish from close range.
The hosts then began to impose themselves on the game, with Olivier Giroud having a goal ruled out for offside.
And the Arsenal forward was involved again when Didier Deschamps' men levelled on 22 minutes. His header forced a good save from Tom Heaton, but Samuel Umtiti was on hand to side-foot the ball in.
Bertrand continued to impress when he found space on the edge of the box before testing Hugo Lloris with a powerful low drive.
The Three Lions were behind though when Ousmane Dembele’s close range effort was parried by Heaton, with the rebound falling kindly to Djibril Sidibe.
After the interval, Kane was on target again as he converted from the spot after Raphael Varane was dismissed for bringing Dele Alli down in the box.
But Gareth Southgate's side couldn't hold out for a draw as Ousmane Dembele's strike across goal saw him register on the international stage for the first time.
