Last Saturday Manolo Gabbiadini became the first Southampton player to score in their opening three Premier League matches.

The Italian struck the third of Southampton’s goals in their 4-3 win at Watford, taking his overall tally for Saints to six from his first four matches at Saints.

His two efforts in the EFL Cup final mean that the striker has scored in all four of his first four games for the club, with his four of his six efforts left-footed finishes.

At present he remains on course to equal a club record of scoring goals in consecutive top-flight games not from their debut. James Beattie currently holds that title for Saints having scored in six successive matches between February and April in 2003.

Gabbiadini had a total of five shots against Watford, two of which were on target, with his goal coming from a rebound on Sofiane Boufal’s long range shot that was spilled by Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Having also scored in three successive matches for former club Napoli against Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Spezia prior to his switch to St Mary’s, Gabbiadini’s hot streak has taken him onto seven games.

It’s not uncommon for Gabbiadini to contribute in consecutive matches. At former club Napoli under the guidance of current Newcastle boss Rafa Benítez, he scored four in five and six in nine during the half-season they spent together in Italy.
