Manolo Gabbiadini says he can’t take anything for granted as he bids to continue his stunning early form with Southampton.

The Italian striker has netted five goals in his opening three games since his January transfer, including two in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Manchester United boss José Mourinho congratulated the striker after Sunday’s game, telling Gabbiadini: 'You did a great job, you scored two phenomenal goals'.

Now Gabbiadini has set his sights on continuing that form, knowing he can’t take his foot off the gas.

“In my case the adventure has started well, but I, by nature, always keep my feet on the ground. Football really is like the open sea,” he told reporters after Sunday’s final.

“There are moments of calm, but suddenly you can be hit by a storm and you can’t ever relax. Five goals in three games is an amazing start.

“But it won’t always be this way. One thing I can guarantee though: I will always give my best, I’ll never give up.

“It has been beautiful, but I need to keep my feet on the ground. Football is strange, you’re flying and then suddenly you crash back down to earth.

“But I’d be lying if I said I’d expected a start like this.”

And Gabbiadini says he’s also forming a positive relationship with manager Claude Puel. “We speak English, Italian and French,” he added.

“The relationship is good. He’s asked me to play as a pure centre-forward, to always gamble at the near post.

“The goal for the one-two, the one from the James Ward-Prowse cross, came from that. We understand each other, that’s the most important thing.”
