MATCH PREVIEW: Southampton vs Sunderland

By SFC Media time Fri 26 Aug Club

Get the lowdown ahead of Southampton's Premier League clash with Sunderland, at St Mary's.

Both teams head into this game looking for their first Premier League win of the season.

Saints have opened up with a 1-1 home draw against Watford, before losing 2-0 away to Manchester United, while Sunderland have lost both of their matches 2-1, away to Manchester City and at home to Middlesbrough.

With both teams under new management this season – Claude Puel in charge at St Mary's and David Moyes having taken up the reins at the Black Cats – the need for a first victory is perhaps particularly important.

Southampton: Jérémy Pied has suffered a knee injury and is set to be missing for a number of weeks, as the extent of the damage is fully assessed. There is good news in the left full-back position, though, with Ryan Bertrand close to a return. The defender has been training and was due to be assessed today, before a final decision is taken on whether he can play. Midfielder Oriol Romeu, who went off in the early stages at Manchester United with a knock, is also fit.

Sunderland: The Black Cats have a long injury list heading into this one. Goalkeeper Vito Mannone is the latest to join it, after damaging elbow ligaments, meaning England Under-21 international Jordan Pickford is set to start in goal. Mannone has joined Seb Larsson, Lee Cattermole and Jan Kirchhoff on the sidelines, while Sunderland also have doubts over Billy Jones, John O'Shea and Fabio Borini. Sunderland have, however, added Atletico Madrid full-back Javier Manquillo on loan this week to boost their squad.
