Højbjerg pleased with progress in Holland

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg believes Southampton are already making noticeable strides on the pre-season tour to Holland.

The midfielder, who signed from Bayern Munich earlier this month, bagged his first goal for the club when he rounded off Saturday’s 4-0 win over PEC Zwolle with a late penalty.

With Wednesday’s game against FC Twente and next Saturday’s fixture with Groningen still to come, Højbjerg says everything is going to plan on the trip so far.

"We try to get the tactical and the mental things and the physical things in the right spot and everybody's doing a very good job – the coaches, the players and the staff,” he said. “It's very nice.”

Reflecting on the win over PEC Zwolle, Højbjerg told youtube.com/southamptonfc: "We all tried to make our best impression and to give our best to show the coach that we've got something that we can help the team with, and I do the same.

“Every player is working hard and giving everything they have. I just try to do my best and hopefully I can help the team and do my best here.”

On his penalty, which came after he was brought down following a mazy run through the opposition defence, Højbjerg said: "Goals are always nice, but I just tried to make my best and help the team.

"I saw there was some space, I took the ball and then there was some more space and I went into it.

“It was a friendly game, so of course it's nice to make a goal, but it's in the Premier League, or in the cup, or in the Europa League where it counts. Right now it's just a nice feeling, but it doesn't give you anything.”
