Cédric and Fonte reach EURO 2016 semi-finals

Southampton defenders Cédric and José Fonte are into the semi-finals of EURO 2016 after Portugal's penalty shootout win over Poland.

The sides drew 1-1 in Marseille after 90 minutes, and could not be separated after extra-time, but Fernando Santos's team triumphed in the quarter-final tie 5-3 on spot kicks.

Cédric and Fonte, who each played the entire game, will now go on to face the winner of the clash between Wales and Belgium tomorrow for a spot in the final.

Portugal had fallen behind in only the second minute of normal time, when Robert Lewandowski side-footed home from inside the area.

However, they equalised in the 33rd minute, when Renato Sanches slammed a left-footed shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

The second half was a less exciting affair, although Cédric went close to a potentially decisive goal when his fierce, angled strike from distance whistled just past the far top corner in the 64th minute.

It was one of few moments of note in the remainder of the game, as it meandered through extra-time before reaching the shootout, where Jakub Blaszczykowski missed with the scores at 3-3, allowing Ricardo Quaresma to convert the winning spot kick.
