Long and Ireland set for France showdown

By SFC Media time Sun 26 Jun Club

Shane Long will today be hoping to keep Republic of Ireland’s EURO 2016 dream alive, as they bid to cause one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far.

Martin O’Neill’s team have advanced to the last 16 of the tournament, but must now face hosts and favourites France, in Lyon (2pm BST).

While it is a daunting task on the face of it, confidence is high among the Irish ranks, following their 1-0 victory over Italy last time out, which ensured they advanced from Group E, as one of the competition’s best third-placed sides.

Long has started all three of Ireland’s matches so far in the tournament and will be hopeful of getting the nod to lead the line once again this afternoon.

The winners of the game will go on to face whoever prevails in the clash between England and Iceland tomorrow night.
