Fonte and Cédric help Portugal progress

By SFC Media time Sat 25 Jun Club

Southampton's José Fonte and Cédric made their first UEFA EURO 2016 appearances, as Portugal beat Croatia 1-0 in the last 16 of the competition.

The duo were both handed their first starts for the clash with Croatia, after Portugal squeezed through to the last 16 thanks to three draws in the group stages.

Fonte and Cédric both impressed at the back for Portugal, who kept Croatia at bay for 120 minutes.

The only goal of the game arrived in extra time, as Ricardo Quaresma headed home from close range after Cristiano Ronaldo's shot had been well saved.

Portugal now face Poland in the quarter-finals of the competition, with the game taking place on Thursday 30th June.
