THE PRESS BOX: Journalists on new Davis contract

Southern Daily Echo journalist Adam Leitch said he was delighted to see midfielder Steven Davis earn a new three-year contract at Southampton.

Speaking on the special Press Box feature on our official YouTube channel, the newspaper’s chief sports writer said the deal for the Northern Ireland captain, which runs through until 2019, was well deserved.

“He's been one of my favourite players for years. I think he's been absolutely brilliant,” he said.

“He's a lot more creative than people think, and also his sheer effort, his work-rate, his pressing, his ability to track back as well he's been brilliant.

“Of all the contracts, I was genuinely the happiest to see that, because I think it was so well merited and well deserved and it sends a really positive message to the rest of the squad that if you work hard and you really get your head down and get about your business and do really well that we will reward you.”

Leitch was joined on the discussion panel by Premier League Productions reporter Paul Belverstone, and BBC Radio Solent sports editor Adam Blackmore.

Blackmore believes the new contracts signed by the likes of Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk and James Ward-Prowse recently, as well as Davis, have sent out a positive message.

“I think it helps the squad, it gives stability to the squad and fans,” he said. “I think it is good, it sends a good message about the club to other clubs.

“To get van Dijk on a new deal when he's just joined the club I thought was making a point about this summer to every other club. The Steven Davis one I loved. I think he is probably the biggest unsung hero of the whole squad.”
