Davis suffers narrow defeat to Germany

By SFC Media time Tue 21 Jun Club

Steven Davis captained Northern Ireland, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat against world champions Germany at EURO 2016.

Mario Gomez's 29th-minute goal separated the sides in Paris, meaning the Irish finish third in Group C.

That may yet be good enough to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament, but Michael O'Neill's side will now face an anxious wait over the next few days to find out if they have done enough to progress.

While the margin of Germany's victory was small, the gap between the sides was bigger than the score suggested, with keeper Michael McGovern producing a string of fine saves to keep the score down, while Germany were also denied by the woodwork.

Northern Ireland's 2-0 win over Ukraine last week may yet prove to be enough to see them through, but they will need to wait on other results to find out.
