Davis and Northern Ireland reach last 16 of EUROs

By SFC Media time Tue 21 Jun Club

Steven Davis and Northern Ireland are celebrating a momentous night, after qualifying for the knockout stages of EURO 2016.

Michael O'Neill's side had a chance to advance from Group C earlier today, but couldn't take the opportunity, as they lost 1-0 to Germany, in Paris.

That left them as the third-placed side and dependent on other results to help them advance.

They didn't have to wait long, though, as Turkey's 2-0 win over Czech Republic in Group D ensured they would be one of the four best third-placed finishers, earning them a spot in the knockout rounds.

Northern Ireland, playing in their first ever European Championship and first major tournament since the 1986 World Cup, will now wait to find out who they will face in the last 16, with their opponents set to be either Wales or hosts France.
