U18s defender Bakary eyes improvement at United

Richard Bakary is looking to maintain Southampton Under-18s’ defensive solidity in Saturday’s game at Manchester United.

Second-year scholar Bakary is confident that Saints will be able to hold their own against this weekend’s opponents, as they head into the game with a record of narrow back-to-back defeats.

The full back, who has played over 20 times for Craig Fleming’s side this season, is relishing the opportunity to test himself against the Red Devils.

“I’m looking forward for that game especially because it’s against a big club in Manchester United,” he told youtube.com/southamptonfc

“We are a team and we work together and I think each and every one of us is looking forward to the game.

“I think they are more technical and maybe a little bit physical as well, but we are a very strong team and we cannot wait for the game on Saturday. We are looking forward to it and really preparing ourselves for it and we will be ready for it.

“It will be an interesting game because I think we will do everything together to try and win. Our back four will be very solid and our front three will be even stronger so all the players are confident, they are happy and they’re looking forward as am I, massively. I can’t wait for the game.”

Bakary feels that his own game has come on leaps and bounds over the course of the season, having had exposure with the under-21 squad during this campaign too, and he says he owes much of that improvement to his fellow squad players.

“I always do my game, but I want to be more aggressive, focus more, be good in the challenges and help my team to try to win the game – that’s what I will do on Saturday,” he said.

“I’ve found it good (this season). You have very good players around you who help you out and make it easy for you. They make you feel happy and confident so with the way you play your teammates hep you and I’ve felt that they’ve really helped me a lot this year.”

And while Bakary feels that his own performances have picked up, the same is true of the team, and he hopes that will be evidenced again this weekend.

“Since last year to this year we have improved massively because before we used to lose three or four nil, and now the teams we are playing against find it harder to beat us,” he outlined.

“Sometimes we’ve been unlucky to lose the game by like a one-nil but it’s something positive from us because that means we are improving.

“On Saturday we’ll try to do our best to win the game and I think we will do that, definitely.”
