Former Southampton manager Lawrie McMenemy will be signing copies of his new book, A Lifetime’s Obsession – My Autobiography, at the St Mary’s Megastore this Saturday.
McMenemy, who masterminded Saints’ famous 1976 FA Cup success, will be meeting fans from 11.30am, ahead of the Barclays Premier League fixture against Newcastle United.
A Lifetime’s Obsession tells the story of McMenemy’s life and career, which spanned more than 1,000 matches and saw him manage some of the sport’s great names and characters.
The book notably explains how he transformed Southampton into FA Cup winners 40 years ago, with his side beating Manchester United in the final at Wembley, before taking them into the top-flight and turning them into challengers for the First Division title.
Saints legend McMenemy, who managed more than 1,000 games in his career, also details how he convinced footballing greats such as Kevin Keegan to sign for the club, in what was one of the game’s most sensational transfers.
Additionally, he offers an insight into his time with England under Graham Taylor and the failure to qualify for the 1994 World Cup finals, while he describes why he turned down the chance to manage Manchester United and also reveals for the first time three other jobs he knocked back.
Lawrie McMenemy: A Lifetime's Obsession – My Autobiography, RRP £18.99.
