Mané helps Senegal close in on Africa Cup of Nations spot

Southampton forward Sadio Mané helped Senegal move to the brink of qualification for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, as they won 2-1 away to Niger.

Senegal, who beat the same opponents 2-0 in Dakar last week, triumphed in Niamey to make it four wins out of four in their group, giving them an almost unassailable lead with two games to play.

Mané was instrumental in the opening goal of the game, winning a penalty that was converted by Moussa Konaté midway through the first half.

A brilliant free-kick from Crystal Palace’s Pape Souaré shortly before the break doubled the visitors’ lead, and, while Victorien Adebayor pulled one back for Niger in the second half via a spot kick, Senegal held on for the three points.

Burundi, who beat Namibia 3-1 today, are the only side who can overhaul Senegal in the standings, but they are six points behind with two to play and have little realistic chance of topping the group.
