Koeman pleased with efforts of Long and Austin

Ronald Koeman was pleased with the efforts of Shane Long and Charlie Austin after they were paired together from the start for the first time against Chelsea.

Long grabbed his tenth goal of the season to give Koeman’s side the lead against the reigning Barclays Premier League champions, while Austin worked tirelessly on his first start for Saints.

Republic of Ireland international Long had to come off through injury – one which Koeman will learn more about on Monday ahead of the trip to AFC Bournemouth – while Austin was replaced with just over ten minutes to play.

On Long, Koeman told youtube.com/southamptonfc: “He’s working well and he’s doing really well. He’s a very dangerous player at the moment.

“He’s full of confidence and that makes it difficult for the opponents.

“At the right moment he was comfortable in the one-on-one and he scored a fantastic goal.

“We have to wait [on the injury]. He had some hamstring problems and we will wait to know if he is available for Tuesday.”

Koeman was also pleased with Austin’s display, adding: “He was working well. Both of the strikers in the first half did a good job.

“They made it difficult for the defenders of Chelsea. In the second half it was more difficult because we didn’t keep the ball so much. That was the problem for them.”
