Dušan Tadić insisted that Saints deserved something from their trip to West Ham.
Ronald Koeman’s side dominated during the first half at the Boleyn Ground, but only led 1-0 at the break, courtesy of a Carl Jenkinson own goal that came about after Tadić got on the end of a Shane Long centre.
The visitors were then made to pay for not taking greater advantage of the control they exerted on the game when Michail Antonio and Andy Carroll scored twice in the space of ten second-half minutes to turn the match on its head.
“I think we dominated the game first half and I think we should score maybe the second goal,” said Tadić.
“We have good ball possession and total domination of the game and second half we expected a reaction of them and in the end we get two goals [against us]. I think we deserved more than nothing today.”
Tadić added: “I think we had some great movements in the first half and they had difficulties with that, we made them a lot of problems. This is how we need to try and play.
“If we play like first half, with that initiative and dominant play normally we won’t have a problem. Second half they reacted better, pressed us more and we had less space.”
Tadić also dismissed any suggestion that the short turnaround between this game and the 4-0 win over Arsenal on Boxing Day had impacted the team in the second half.
“They also have the same situation,” he said. “I think this is not the main reason, just we get goals in bad moments and then they got energy after the first goal and they pushed more.”
