Radhi Jaïdi wants Southampton Under-21s to use the disappointment of the heavy defeat to Norwich City as a real learning curve.
Despite a double from Ryan Seager, Jaïdi’s young side lost 7-2 at Carrow Road, with Cameron King scoring twice and Jamar Laza grabbing five goals for the Canaries.
Having taken the lead in just the tenth minute, Saints found themselves 4-1 down at half time and Jaïdi was left frustrated with the way his side handled themselves under pressure.
“I thought we prepared well and we started the game well. I thought we could’ve kept the ball and controlled the game after scoring,” Jaïdi told youtube.com/southamptonfc.
“But we played against an experienced team – a team who if you give two or three chances to, they use them. We conceded four goals against the play.
“It was a mess, and when I say mess I mean some players you can see even emotionally by their reactions and that’s what they need to learn.
“They need to be stronger characters. They need to understand the game and deal with the environment and all of the circumstances.
“I spoke to them at half time and said they needed to show that character and react. That happened and we scored a late goal.
“But I thought we let ourselves down at the end of the game and conceded several goals. We let ourselves down in terms of giving them opportunities and in terms of what we could have done better.”
Despite acknowledging individual errors had cost his side dear at Carrow Road, Jaïdi was quick to tell his players that the team performance had not been good enough.
“There were a lot of individual mistakes and they are disappointed, but I explained to them it’s a group game,” the former Saints defender added.
“I know there were some individual errors, but it’s still a group game. They need to keep it in their minds and use it positively to progress and develop.
“Hopefully the response will be a quick one.”
