Fonte should be fit for Liverpool, says Koeman

José Fonte should be fit for Wednesday’s Capital One Cup quarter-final, despite going off with an injury in the first half at Manchester City, according to Ronald Koeman.

The Saints captain had to be substituted for Steven Caulker in the 36th minute after sustaining a cut to his knee.

Fonte had gone back to the dressing room in a bid to get the issue patched up, but Koeman explained that they could not afford to wait too long and had to make the switch.

"That was the problem, we had to wait too long and you can't wait for ten minutes,” Koeman told youtube.com/southamptonfc.

But the Saints manager allayed any fears about Fonte being sidelined for any further time, indicating that he should be fit to face Liverpool in Wednesday’s showdown at St Mary’s.

"Normally he will be ok,” said Koeman. “I think he will be ok for Wednesday.”
