Virgil van Dijk said it was a “dream come true” to score for Southampton in the team’s 3-1 win over Swansea City on Saturday.

The Dutchman marked his third league appearance with Saints by scoring the opening goal of the game against the Swans as he headed home James Ward-Prowse’s corner in the eleventh minute of play.

The goal and the subsequent win capped off a fine day for the deadline-day arrival from Glasgow Celtic, who added that he’s settled quickly into life at St Mary’s.

“It’s a dream come true to score in the Premier League and scoring is an amazing feeling and in the end it’s a very important win,” said Van Dijk.

“We needed to win and we got it as well and we deserved it as well.

“I’ve been very welcome since the day I arrive, it’s been an amazing place to be. The feeling I have right now is very good and I’m very satisfied that I made this step.”

Van Dijk believes he has learned much about the demands of the Premier League already, and is enjoying being a part of the set-up at St Mary’s.

“You talk a lot with each-other, so the team spirit is very good and I think that’s the base of a good team,” he said of his new surroundings.

“The most important thing is to get used to the tempo. Get the style of play of the team, get to know your team-mates a lot better than now.

“It takes a bit of time, it feels already like I’ve been here for months and that’s a good thing for the team.”
