Romeu grateful to Saints for second chance

In an exclusive interview inside this weekend’s edition of SAINTS – the club’s official matchday magazine – Romeu highlights how he has learned from his time at Chelsea, as well as his recent loan spells at Valencia and VfB Stuttgart in the previous two years.

It hasn’t taken long for Saints’ recent signing to settle into life at Southampton, and he believes the Barclays Premier League is where all players want to be playing their football.

“The style of play in England is probably similar to Germany as it’s strong and quick, and aggressive, but the atmosphere in England is something different from everywhere else,” said Romeu.

“It’s so lovely for a player to be in the Premier League and at such a club like Southampton. For me, it was always my target to play in the Premier League and it’s good to be back in this lovely country because the fans make it amazing to play here. It’s a dream.”

The only thing missing from that dream right now is a first league win for his new club. Romeu’s introduction at half time against Everton shored Saints up, and his presence in last weekend’s 0-0 draw at Watford gave the team something to build from.

The midfielder is confident the positive results will soon follow.

“The players are very good and the club is in a very good position to succeed,” added the Spaniard, who signed a three-year deal with Saints just over a fortnight ago. 

“We have very good players and the mentality is just to win every game and we either haven’t been lucky enough or we didn’t play well enough in my first couple of games. But I think the way that we play and the way we want to do everything is good.

“Some of the older players try to motivate the younger ones and there’s a good mix of ages which is what I’m very surprised to find in a very good team.”
