Fonte's Portugal beat Tadić and Djuričić's Serbia

José Fonte’s Portugal came out on top against Dušan Tadić and Filip Djuričić’s Serbia in a UEFA EURO 2016 Group I qualifier, winning 2-1 in Lisbon.

Tadić was the only Southampton man to start the game, with Fonte and Djuričić among the substitutes for their respective countries.

It was Fonte’s Portugal who took an early lead, when an unmarked Ricardo Carvalho headed home from close range, but the defender went off injured soon after and Fonte came on in his place.

Nemanja Matic equalised for Serbia shortly after half-time but Portugal immediately went back in front when Fabio Coentrao slotted home at the back post.

Djuričić was introduced for Serbia on the hour mark as Radovan Curcic looked for his side to find a way back into the game for a second time.

Tadić made way with ten minutes to go and Serbia were unable to find a way through as Fonte’s Portugal picked up an important three points.

The Portuguese are in action again on Tuesday night when they take on Cape Verde, while Tadić and Djuričić will now be free to head back to Southampton.
