THE MIXED ZONE: Clyne, Forster, Fonte & Davis on Hull win

Nathaniel Clyne, Fraser Forster, José Fonte and Steven Davis all spoke to the press following Saturday's 1-0 win against Hull City at the KC Stadium.

Here's what the quarter had to say after Victor Wanyama's goal earned Ronald Koeman's side all three points:

Nathaniel Clyne on knowing it would be a tough game at Hull…

“Definitely, especially when we played the game midweek – a tough game away to Stoke. We advanced in the cup and also to come here and try to put in a performance like we did today. We played well and I think we deserved the victory.

“We’re on a good run of form at the moment, we’re winning, we keep getting clean sheets as well, we’re all working hard in training and on the matchday.

“Hopefully we can continue our run of form and we can see where we can go with it. We’re just going to keep pushing. A few are talking about Europe, but we’re just going to keep pushing and hopefully let the results take care of itself.

“We work hard on our defensive shape in training and it shows during the games. We’re solid, we’re tough to beat. I think they (Hull) only had one shot at goal and it’s good. Hopefully it continues.”

Steven Davis on Victor Wanyama’s brilliant goal to win the game…

“It was only a half-chance to be fair and Victor put it in the only place it could’ve gone. He got the right connection on it and I was delighted with him getting the goal, it really set the tone for us.

“He has started well and so have the other midfielders. I just need to get some goals myself, but I’m delighted with the run we’re on, we just need to keep it going and keep the momentum.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, and that proved to be the case. Hull is always a difficult place to come and they’ve started the season well. The goal was worthy of winning any game.”

Fraser Forster on another clean sheet and a strong defensive display…

“They had very few chances and we were solid at the back. We probably could have played better football. We have set the standard very high, but you have to grind out results sometimes and we did that. I was pleased to get another clean sheet and the three points.

“We scored and it was a fantastic finish but then they really came at us. It was important we stayed strong and we didn’t really give them any real chances at goal even though they had a lot of pressure.

“We tried to get on the ball and keep moving it. We’ve done tremendously well to see the game out, we’ve had two very tough games this week and to win both is fantastic.”

José Fonte on a great week for Saints on the road…

“It has been fantastic. Another great team performance. You could see the energy levels, they weren’t the greatest, but the most important was the maturity that we showed, the intelligence in managing the game.

“We got the early goal, which sometimes can be difficult, so I was happy with how we managed the game and controlled it. It was a very mature performance.

“In the second half we could have killed the game. We had chances, but defensively we were fantastic. Everyone is helping, everyone is defending, it’s just a great place to be at the moment.

“You need to be intelligent. During the game, you need to understand how can you win the game, and how you can do it in the best way possible. It’s just great to see that everyone is understanding and buying into the philosophy of how to win games of football.

“It is a pleasure to be in this team, and I hope we can maintain the level. I think we will. We will take it game by game and we focus on the next one.”
