TALKING POINTS: Koeman's post-Hull City press conference

By SFC Media time Sun 02 Nov Men's First team

Ronald Koeman spoke to the media following Southampton's 1-0 win against Hull City at the KC Stadium on Saturday.

Here's what Saints' manager had to say to the media:

On fans chanting ‘we’re going to win the league’…

Maybe, maybe, we’re always positive, but that’s not what will happen. We must continue winning, continue up in the table.

We have good team organisation, we showed that again. After the incredible 1-0 from Victor [Wanyama] maybe we were a little bit sloppy after that for 20-25 minutes, Hull were controlling the game, they dominated, but they didn’t create a lot of good chances.

They didn’t create any chance in the second half. I think in the second half we played outstanding, maybe we had to score the second goal but the team performance was incredible in how we like to play in a defensive way, how we like to press the opponent, and I’m proud of the players.

It was a tough week, three games in a row, physical ones for the two times against Stoke and a great win [against Hull].

On being surprised by Saints’ position in the table at this stage…

Surprised a little bit, yes of course, about the points now that we have but not surprised about the quality in the team because we have good players.

We work hard to have good organisation in the team because clean sheets bring points and it is important to have that in the team. We received only five goals until now, that is one of the key things to be successful until now.

On the performance of Victor Wanyama…

He was fantastic. The goal was amazing but how he played in everything in the midfield – he was strong, he was winning battles, he was good on the ball and we had good positional play.

It’s important and it’s fantastic to have those kind of players. Now Jack Cork was not playing and we have more options in the midfield. We need that in a long tough season.

On his team’s good organisation…

We don’t play in Europe, we have a lot of time to have training sessions during the week and that gives more time to develop the players and to develop the team.

That’s good because we like to continue what they did last season, we like to continue that, not to be a club one season up and the next two seasons down in the table.

We like to continue because that’s the ambition of the club, that’s my ambition and it is the ambition of the players.

On the high expectations being placed on his team now…

The expectation is high and I like that because we like to win something. We are football players and we like to win games and if you win games you will have good possibilities, maybe to play in Europe, you never know.

Everybody knows we have to work hard every day and the players are incredible in the way they are acting together. The spirit again we showed is important and we have to keep that.

It is easy to keep that if you win, it is more difficult to keep that if you lose. If we keep like this, it can be a fantastic season.
