U18 PREVIEW: Isted wants defensive response

Harry Isted is keen for Saints Under-18s to bounce back from late disappointment in last week’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City when they face Aston Villa on Saturday.

After dominating against the Canaries but only having a 1-0 scoreline to show for it, Isted was prevented a fourth clean sheet in a row due to an 86th minute free-kick.

Despite letting in the equaliser, the goalkeeper has been pleased by the solidarity shown by those in front of him in recent times.

“I couldn’t see them scoring, but it was really disappointing to let that in,” Isted said of last weekend’s result. “We probably should have scored about five or six and put it to bed.

“It’s decent to get three clean sheets. The defence has been working hard in training. It was disappointing at the weekend to concede late, but we’ll definitely learn from how we didn’t defend well from it and take it into Saturday’s game.”

Isted attributed a lot of the sturdiness to the bonds shared between the U18 custodian and all of the defensive personnel in the team, and hopes that shines through against Villa.

“I’ve got good relationships with them all,” the youngster continued. “We beat Fulham and then the next week two full-backs had changed, but we still really worked well together.

“We’re really confident. Seeing them one place above motivates us to get above them. We’re out to prove that we should have won that game, and that we want to actually win this time.”
