Saints boss impressed as players give up day off

Ronald Koeman has revealed that his squad cancelled their planned day off yesterday in order to prepare for this weekend’s game against Queens Park Rangers.

After recording their fifth consecutive win on Tuesday with a Capital One Cup victory over Arsenal, Southampton’s players were not due to report back to Staplewood until this morning.

However, speaking at his press conference ahead of this weekend’s match, Koeman described how that plan was altered.

“We planned for Wednesday to be a day off after the Tuesday,” he told the media, “but José Fonte said to me: “Boss, we’d like to come and train tomorrow.”

“I said: “But you have a day off – I’ve planned a lot of things with my wife!” So we changed it, and we had a recovery session.

“The players showed a great ambition. I’ve never had a squad say no to a day off. That means a lot for me.

“We’ve spoke to each other and said that if they win against Queens Park Rangers then they’ll get that day off next week, so we hope to win on Saturday.”
