Upton Park win sends out a statement – Schneiderlin

Morgan Schneiderlin says Southampton’s win over West Ham sent out a clear message about the side’s capabilities.

The Frenchman scored twice as Saints ran out 3-1 winners at Upton Park to climb to sixth in the Barclays Premier League table.

And Schneiderlin is already looking forward to building on that platform when Newcastle come to St Mary’s after a two-week international break.

“First I want to speak about the win, because that win was very important for us,” he told youtube.com/southamptonfc

“We wanted to make a statement and it’s never easy to come to a place like West Ham and perform as we did, so we are very happy to play so well.

“We had a good performance, but the main thing was the character of the team. We didn’t let ourselves down and we still played good football.

“We played out from the back and we were never nervous. We are very confident in our capacity, and we did very well with and without the ball.

“It’s up to us to have a good rest and enjoy this one then come back against Newcastle the same way,” he continued.

“If we didn’t win [against West Ham] then of course the game against Newcastle would have been a bit of a shaky one, so we are happy to have put that to bed.

“We know that we can win games in the Premier League and we know we can do something very good. We have good players, and we want to keep going and to keep winning games.”

After a summer filled with speculation over his future, Schneiderlin was pleased to open his goalscoring account for the season, adding that he’s looking forward to proving his worth in the coming months.

“Personally it was important for me to score those goals,” he said. “I am very happy because I work hard on that aspect of the game, and I want to score many more.

“My job now is to show on the pitch that I am committed to Southampton and to play my best – that’s the most important thing for me.”
