Josh Sims made an excellent bow for England’s Under-17s this afternoon as he helped to secure a 2-0 victory over Holland in the side’s first game in the Algarve Tournament.
16-year-old Sims was called into the side as a late replacement last Friday, before flying out to Portugal the following day.
The winger was then named in the Young Lions’ starting line-up for this afternoon’s tournament opener against Holland at the Estadio Municipal in Lagos.
And, after a goalless first half, Sims helped England into the lead after breaking clear of the Dutch defence before finishing past goalkeeper Yanick Van Osch.
The Saints youngster then had a hand in the second goal, latching onto a poor back-pass before squaring for Spurs’ Joshua Onomah to slot in for 2-0.
Next up for England is a game against hosts Portugal, who drew 1-1 with Germany in the other match on the opening day of the four-team tournament.
The Young Lions’ second fixture takes place this Friday at the 30,000-seater Estádio Algarve with a 4pm kick-off time.
