Shaw To Come Back Stronger

Luke Shaw says he intends to use his summer break to ensure he comes back in peak physical condition for his second season as a professional.

17-year-old Shaw has withdrawn from the England Under-21 squad for the 2013 UEFA European U21 Championships after suffering a number of minor injuries and illnesses towards the end of his debut first-team campaign.

Having made his league bow as a substitute at West Brom last November, Shaw racked up 25 top-flight appearances for Southampton this season.

In February, the left-back was called up by England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce for the first time only to suffer an injury in his maiden training session with the Young Lions.

He was selected again six weeks later but again had to pull out having failed to recover from a knock sustained in our win over Liverpool the previous week.

The youngster ended the season by playing in games against Spurs, Sunderland and Stoke this month, and was then named in Pearce's 23-man party to travel to Israel for Euro 2013.

However, Shaw has now been forced to pull out of the trip with the knocks sustained towards the end of his debut season in professional football having clearly taken their toll.

He will now use the summer to prepare for the 2013/14 campaign, and he is determined to return to Staplewood at the start of July in fine fettle.

"It was a very good season for me, especially with me being 17," Luke reflected to Saints Player

"Making over 20 appearances in the Premier League is amazing, and hopefully I can come back in good shape for pre-season and keep my form up.

"Next season is going to be a new start for me. Last pre-season I came back in very bad shape, but I've spoken with the gaffer and the fitness coaches here and next season there's going to be a new me.

"[This season] I picked up a few injuries and illnesses, and I think that may be down to what I eat, how I sleep and how I recover.

"In pre-season, there's going to be a new me and hopefully that will change things."

Looking back over 2012/13 campaign, Shaw says his self-belief swelled over the course of the season and that he's looking forward to continuing his development next time out.

"Over the last 15 games, I think I grew in maturity and in the way I play," he affirms.

"I think I'm starting to believe in myself in the Premier League with all of its top players, and hopefully I can just carry on doing that.

"I'm still 17, so it's a dream for me to be playing in the Premier League," he added.

"I just try to keep my head down and work hard – that's all I've done this season, and I'll keep doing that next season."
