Rodriguez Lauds Supporters

Jay Rodriguez paid tribute to the Southampton supporters who have welcomed him to the club in his debut season.

The striker was warmly received in his maiden campaign at St Mary’s, providing a return of nine goals in all competitions, and the former Burnley man admits that he has thrived on the fans’ backing throughout the year.

"The fans have been great – look how many turned out [on Sunday],” he said.

“It's a great stadium to be at and we've got a good fan-base so there's been a great atmosphere every time we’ve played here.”

Finishing above the likes of Sunderland, Aston Villa, and Newcastle proved how far Saints have come, and Rodriguez is now keen to build on a successful return to the top-flight.

"It's been good,” he assessed. “We're glad to have stayed in the Premier League and now we need to build on that next year so that's what we'll be looking for.

“It is a good feeling at the moment.

“On a personal note, I'd have liked a few more goals, so that's a target for next season.”

The season ended with a 1-1 draw against Stoke City at St Mary’s, a point which saw Jay’s side finish just behind their opponents in the table. A win would have lifted Saints up to 12th in the final reckoning, whilst a defeat would have resulted in being 16th. Rodriguez was therefore, satisfied with the campaign’s finale.

"I think we're a little bit frustrated because we played some good football at times but we didn't get the win. At least we didn't get beaten."
