Mauricio Pochettino believes that the win over Liverpool arrived from the strides his squad has taken in recent weeks.
The manager highlighted that although he and his players have not had much time together, the work that has been put in on the training ground is coming to fruition.
“Today we are really happy and satisfied with the result,” he told Saints Player.
“Sometimes you do the same kind of work and have a similar feeling about a game as we did today and you don’t get the victory, but at the end of the day all of the work we do is to get three points.
“I am really pleased with the trajectory that we have been on over the past few weeks, and my players put in a lot of effort in order to get the three points.
“I am the kind of person who thinks things can always improve,” Pochettino added. “We still have a lot of work ahead of us and this is really only the start because two months in football isn’t a long time.
“I have an intelligent team that has responded well to my ideas and things are progressing faster than we thought they would.”
Saints went 2-0 up on their opponents at St Mary’s, but Pochettino revealed the extent that Phillipe Coutinho’s strike at the end of the first half altered things at the break.
“A lot!” he remarked. “We cannot allow ourselves to concede a goal in the manner that we did, these are the things that we need to work on and improve upon.
“However, I think we interpreted the game plan from the very first minute and all the hard work we have put in on the training ground over the week was transferred onto the pitch.
“As a manager these things satisfy me, as does seeing the smiles on the face of my players in the changing room.”
The gaffer has a fortnight to prepare for Saints’ next Premier League game against Chelsea, but must accommodate for the international break next weekend.
“I have eleven players that will leave during the international break,” he highlighted.
“So there won’t be many of us on the training pitch, but you face these 15 days ahead with a smile when you get a result like this one today.”
