Willo Backing 18s To Push On

Paul Williams says the Under-18s can take confidence from last weekend’s win over Manchester United.

The youngsters made it back-to-back victories in the Elite group of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League with a 4-2 success over the Red Devils at Staplewood, and this Saturday, they travel to Everton in search of a hat-trick of wins, boosted by their upturn in form.

“We’ve found that the groups after Christmas are tougher now with the split, as you’re now coming up against teams who were top in their groups and second places," the 18s assistant coach told saintsfc.co.uk "To beat Manchester United at any level though is a good result, and it was great for the Academy.

“We started that game very well. We spoke to the lads after the game and just reminded them that about concentration.

“I thought we controlled the game for long periods in both halves and we probably could have kicked on to get a couple more goals, but give credit to Man United they came back into it and they gave us a good game.”

Saints are currently second in the Elite group standings with eight points from five games, though they have played more matches than any other team going into this weekend’s contest.

Everton sit in fourth place and beat Jason Dodd’s side 2-0 in the third round of the FA Youth Cup at St Mary’s during December.

“We knew what to expect and at the turn of the year in terms of teams we’re facing, but I think the belief is starting to come through now and we’re getting together as a team,” Williams explained.

“The results are now coming too and that will give us the belief that we are capable of competing in this division.”
