21.55

Ward-Prowse behind the set-piece

A late challenge on Stuart Armstrong by McGinn sees Saints awarded with a free-kick in a dangerous position. Bazunu makes the journey forward once again, but the ball falls for Stuart Armstrong and his effort goes wide.

90+4’

Last ditch effort?

Ward-Prowse delivers a ball into the area, Bella-Kotchap gets a head to it but it goes wide of the post, taking a deflection on the way. The resulting corner sees Bazunu come forward for Saints, having to make a surge back to goal as Danny Ings hits the counter. Luckily for Saints, Ings' shot is miscued and well adrift of the target.

90+2’

Yellow Card for Ashley Young (Aston Villa)

Young is shown a yellow for a late challenge on Edozie.

90+1’

Five additional minutes ...

Can Saints get anything from this match?

89’

The former Saint enters the field of play.

82’

Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

The Saints captain is in the book.

80’

Southampton substitution: Samuel Edozie replaces Mohamed Elyounoussi

A final roll of the dice from the Saints boss.

78’

Martinez collects from Mara

With Saints struggling to break through in the final third, Salisu launches one of his trademark long throws into the area. It first falls to the head of Aribo, then bouncing back to Mara but his effort falls easily for Martinez.

73’

Southampton substitution: Stuart Armstrong replaces Adam Armstrong

One Armstrong on for the other as Hasenhüttl makes a fourth change.

72’

Southampton substitution: Sékou Mara replaces Ché Adams

A third substitution from Hasenhüttl.

20 minutes to go ⏰

Little to report on in the second half, with opportunities few and far between for both sides. Can Saints find the equaliser?

67’

Aston Villa substitution: Leander Dendoncker replaces Leon Bailey

Another one. Dendoncker makes his debut for Villa.

67’

Aston Villa substitution: Emiliano Buendía replaces Jacob Ramsey

A second substitution for the hosts.

61’

Villa searching for a second

Aribo makes a late challenge on McGinn, awarding the hosts a free-kick. Digne is the man behind the dead ball, but his shot is easily blocked by the Saints wall. The threat continues for Saints, though, with Mings knocking the ball down for Ramsey but his strike is once again cleared by the Saints defence.

58’

Yellow Card for Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa)

Ramsey is in the book for a challenge on Djenepo.

51’

Adams miscues

A strong start to the second half for Saints, who look to benefit off a couple of set-pieces early on. Adams is the latest to try his luck from range, but his effort is a poor one and goes well wide of the post.

49’

Appeals for handball

Ward-Prowse takes a free-kick after Djenepo is brought down, while the original effort is blocked Elyounoussi tries his luck from the edge of the area but sees his shot is blocked by the Villa defence. Calls for a handball but a shake of the head from Tony Harrington.

46’

Southampton substitution: Joe Aribo replaces Ibrahima Diallo

A statement of intent from Hasenhüttl after the break.

46’

Southampton substitution: Juan Larios replaces Romain Perraud

The first of two substitutions for Hasenhüttl.

HALF TIME: Aston Villa 1-0 Saints

Half time at Villa Park with the hosts holding the advantage at the break. After a lacklustre performance from both sides for much of the opening half, it was Jacob Ramsey that found the break through for Steven Gerrard's side. With Saints claiming the most points from losing positions this season in the Premier League, the task is on to do so again.

45+2’

Bailey drags it wide

It's nearly a second for the hosts as Bailey takes on Perraud inside the area, he gets the ball past the Frenchman and Bazunu but it bounces wide for a corner.

45’

Aston Villa substitution: Douglas Luiz Soares de Paulo replaces Boubacar Kamara

Steven Gerrard is forced to make an early change at Villa Park.

44’

VAR Decision: Goal awarded for Aston Villa [Jacob Ramsey] was confirmed

A quick VAR check for offside, but the goal stands.

Ramsey gives Villa the lead

A breakthrough goal for Villa. Coutinho plays the corner short before looping a cross into the head of Watkins, Bazunu gets a hand to it before the ball bounces back down off the crossbar. Ramsey is there to fire the ball into the back of the net to give the hosts the lead.

42’

GOAL

Jacob Ramsey (42’) | 1 0

35’

Coutinho fires over

A great turn from Coutinho who makes a run towards the area, before trying his luck from outside the box. A powerful strike, but it fires over Bazunu's bar.

34’

Villa pile the pressure on Saints

Bailey skips past Salisu before delivering a ball into the back post, Bella-Kotchap is there to clear for Saints as the ball heads behind for a corner.

27’

Elyounoussi breaks down the left

A nice move from the Norwegian international, who tries to cut the ball across goal for Adams but again Konsa is there to intercept for Villa.

21’

Bailey hesitates

Villa look to find an opening in the game, with Coutinho once again launching the attack before finding Watkins just outside the area. The ball falls for Bailey in close range of goal, but the winger takes too much time on the ball and the opportunity fizzles out.

Stunning footwork from Walker-Peters

Phenomenal from Walker-Peters, who dances past a number of Villa players and into the area. Digne does enough to clear, but a wonderful move from the Saint.

13’

Djenepo displays his skill

Excellent work from Djenepo down the wing, skipping past Digne before looping the ball into the area. While Adams the intended target, Konsa is there to clear the threat for the hosts. Much better from Saints.

12’

Bettter from Saints

First period of sustained possession for Saints, Ward-Prowse gets behind a free-kick from the wing but his low cross is deflected away by Young. Some strong work to maintain possession from the men in white, but ultimately nothing comes from the opportunity.

8’

Bailey bounces wide

An inch-perfect pass from Coutinho falls perfectly for Bailey, while he tries to get the ball under control before releasing a shot, he fails to meet the target with Bazunu allowing the ball to bounce wide of the post.

6’

Villa on the front foot

It's the hosts who've held most of the possession in the opening stages, McGinn executes a well-timed tackle on Walker-Peters to regain possession in the Saints half but the opportunity fades away as Bella-Kotchap does well to see the ball go behind for a goal-kick.

Underway at Villa Park!

Following a minute's silence and the National Anthem in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the action has commenced.

They are full of high individual quality in the team and after a not so easy start in the Premier League, which is normal, they are starting to play better and the last game against Man City showed how good they can be at home."

They’ve recruited really well, and he seems to be recruiting young players that are full of energy and have no fear. I worked with one of them, Joe Aribo, up at Rangers and I know what he’s capable of. They’re a dynamic team, they’re young and athletic. They’re capable of pressing in transition. They’ve gone a bit more direct and shown they’re up for the fight."
