LIV vs SOU As It Happened
Key moments so far
- Southampton beaten 4-0 at Anfield
- Jota scores twice; Thiago adds heavily-deflected third before half time
- van Dijk adds Liverpool's fourth from Alexander-Arnold's corner
- Adam Armstrong twice goes close for Saints; Broja also denied by Alisson in first half
FULL TIME: Liverpool 4-0 Southampton
Saints can have no complaints about this outcome. Liverpool were ruthless, particularly in the first half, when Diogo Jota scored twice before Thiago made it 3-0 with a slice of luck. Former Saint Virgil van Dijk added a fourth early in the second half, but the latter stages were played out without incident. Saints had chances, but on another day the hosts may have scored more themselves.
Southampton substitution: Kyle Walker-Peters replaces Romain Perraud
Saints' final change is a straight swap at left-back.
Liverpool caught out
Ward-Prowse's quick thinking catches Liverpool off guard. He releases Tella down the left, whose low cross is put behind by van Dijk.
Milner shoots wide
The substitute just dragged it slightly from the edge of the box.
Liverpool substitution: Takumi Minamino replaces Diogo José Teixeira da Silva
No hat-trick for Jota, who was electric in the first half.
Oxlade-Chamberlain tests McCarthy
Jota races down the left and squares the ball for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who shoots first time from 20 yards, but it's straight at McCarthy, who parries the ball clear.
Salisu blocks Salah's shot
That was curling in from the Egyptian, but Salisu stoops to head the ball behind.
Jota spurns hat-trick chance
Robertson fires in another brilliant cross and Jota looks set to complete his hat-trick, but cannot control his shot on the stretch and it flies off target from close range.
2️⃣0️⃣ minutes to go...
Saints have not stopped pushing for a goal back, but the game is beginning to drift now.
Liverpool substitution: James Milner replaces Jordan Henderson
It's a straight swap in midfield for the hosts.
Saints continue to attack
Armstrong sees a shot blocked, the ball breaks for Perraud, but Liverpool smuggle the ball behind for a corner.
Liverpool substitution: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaces Thiago Alcántara do Nascimento
Liverpool's first change is to introduce another ex-Saint from the bench.
Armstrong denied by Alisson
Tella crosses low for the striker, whose first shot is blocked by Konaté and his second saved by Alisson. Broja wanted a cutback from the second one, but Armstrong went for goal.
van Dijk adds Liverpool's fourth
After McCarthy's spectacular save denies Mané, Alexander-Arnold's resulting corner is volleyed home by van Dijk. The big defender had far too much space in the box.
GOAL
Virgil van Dijk (52’) | 4 – 0

We're back into the action
The second half is up and running. Saints know they need a big improvement from here.
Southampton substitution: Nathan Tella replaces Ché Adams
Saints have reverted to their usual 4-2-2-2 formation in the second half.
Southampton substitution: Nathan Redmond replaces Jan Bednarek
It's a double change for Saints at the break.
HALF TIME: Liverpool 3-0 Southampton
A first half to forget for Saints, who have been overwhelmed by a top team at the top of their game. Diogo Jota got the ball rolling inside two minutes, doubling his tally half an hour later. Thiago's deflected shot made it three, and Liverpool could have had more. Saints have had chances, namely through Armando Broja and Adam Armstrong, but the hosts' attacking play has been too good so far.
Jota off target
He's been a constant menace so far. Jota this time stretches for the ball and his shot flies wide.
Salah wastes a slick counter
Liverpool were charging forward again, but Salah's pass towards Jota is well overhit, and Saints survive the 2v1 situation.
Alisson keeps Saints at bay
A lovely pass from Adams releases Livramento down the right, whose cross picks out Adam Armstrong. The striker has time to pick his spot, but doesn't quite get hold of the shot, and Alisson is able to push it behind for a corner.
Jota fires wide
Again he links up with Robertson, jinks inside, but is just put off enough to send his shot well wide of the target.
Thiago makes it three
Thiago drills a left-footed shot from the edge of the box that takes an almighty deflection off Lyanco. Absolutely nothing McCarthy can do about that.
GOAL
Thiago Alcántara do Nascimento (37’) | 3 – 0

Jota threatening again
The Portuguese is hat-trick hunting, but Lyanco makes an important block to deny him.
Jota scores his second
It's rather too easy from a Saints perspective. Salah plays a one-two, gets to the byeline and rolls the ball across goal for Jota to score again. Painfully similar to the opener.
GOAL
Diogo José Teixeira da Silva (31’) | 2 – 0

Henderson shoots over
Salah gets away down the right, cuts back and tees up Henderson, but his first-time shot is high over the crossbar. A half-chance for the captain.
Broja gets in behind again
Adams pokes the ball through for Broja, who looks to be clearly offside. Maybe deep down the striker knew it, as he steers the ball wide before the flag eventually goes up, much to the frustration of the home crowd.
Broja denied by Alisson
That was Saints' best moment of the game so far. Broja shows great pace to run beyond the Liverpool backline, but Alisson advances and cuts down the angles with a smart save. Encouragement for the visitors.
Wasteful from Mané
The winger just had to slide the ball to his left for the galloping Robertson, but he overcooks the pass and Saints survive another fast break.
Salah goes close
The Egyptian already has a whopping 17 goals to his name this season, and he was close to number 18 with a curling shot that just flashes past McCarthy's far post.
Liverpool attacking with purpose
The trouble for Saints is that every time Liverpool win the ball back they look dangerous. The front three are surging forward, and it's proving very difficult to deal with...
Saints settling into the game
Having been rocked by the early opener, Saints are enjoying some more possession higher up the pitch. Twice Perraud has found decent opportunities to cross, but has not found a good enough final ball.
Mané denied by the flag
The former Saint heads in another superb Robertson delivery, but Liverpool's celebrations are cut short by the offside flag.
Yellow Card for Lyanco Vojnovic (Southampton)
Lyanco catches Mané and it's an early booking for the Brazilian on his first Premier League start.
Mané heads wide
Liverpool are in the mood here. Robertson gets to the byeline again, crossing for Mané to head just wide of the far post. Saints need a foothold in the game.
Jota fires Liverpool into an early lead
Saints had started brightly, winning a corner in the opening minute, but Liverpool respond emphatically. Robertson trades passes with Mané and cuts the ball back for Jota to score from six yards.
GOAL
Diogo José Teixeira da Silva (1’) | 1 – 0
